I love spending early mornings catching up with the big stack of newsletters that hit my inbox just about the time I’m relaxing with a cup of coffee, and, frankly, these more personal posts are always a favorite to read and write. I previously wrote a column called “Coffee Talk” on my blog, and I think of these as more relaxed versions of the same column. It’s fun to catch up, and I hope you share what you’re up to in the comments. Happy New Year!
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in California. We spent a substantial amount of time this summer in an area that has now been permanently changed. I’ve been dwelling on this a lot—the simple twist of fate that kept us in New York instead of moving to this specific area of California several years ago. I hope that, if you or a loved one has been affected by the fires, you are safe.
Inspired by… Everyone’s 2024 favorites list! I love seeing what people loved and used last year. I also loved creating my own list. It was an interesting exercise to think back through the year about everything I wore and loved—I’m planning to do this monthly as it was a great way to feel particularly appreciative.
Doing… Recovering. We’ve all been systematically hit by various illnesses since December 20th, so it’s been definitely a quiet holiday season here in our neck of the woods. Based on how I felt at the beginning of the year (I was the last one to get this), it’s as clear a sign from the universe as any I’ve ever received that I need to SLOW. DOWN. for 2025.
Wearing… Every warm thing I own! It’s been so cold and windy here. La Ligne kindly sent me this Marin Lite sweater, and it’s a great layering piece—warm, but not as thick as the Mini Marin. For this weight, I love the longer length (the Mini Marin is cropped). I’m planning to wear with slim pants and jeans.
Wearing II… I have really been embracing being COZY this winter, so that means pulling out my enormous, fluffy down comforter. Because it’s so thick and warm, I’ve been switching over from my favorite flannel pyjama sets to this uber-comfy pair from Lake Pajamas’ Valentine’s Day collection (#gifted). I love Lake Pajamas and find them to be one of the very few influencer-favorite brands that are really, really worth it. I always size up in Lake because I find they shrink slightly in the dryer (I am too lazy to hang dry these). I love the long sleeved tee/shorts combo for this set, and it goes without saying that the pima cotton is so light and breathable. A great addition to my pyjama collection!
Cooking… peppermint bark cookies! I don’t care that Christmas is over, these are the BEST.
Doing II… getting organized! I struggle every year to actually commit to using a paper planner (or, to be fair, a digital organizer), but this year I feel very committed because I love my planner. Simplified sent me their Weekly Planner about five seconds before I hit purchase, which was very convenient for me! I love how it’s laid out, with plenty of space for scheduled meetings and tasks to accomplish. I also am finding the habit tracker and weekly chore schedule sections very helpful, particularly as a I struggle to launch into 2025 after a long illness.
Listening… I’m a big fan of folk music and have been all my life. Nearly a decade in an uber-progressive Montessori school, where our head of school marched on Washington and was involved in the counter-culture movements of the 60s, meant that the soundtrack to my school days consisted of Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul, and Mary. It’s been very sad to see so many icons pass away over the past few weeks, so I’ve been listening to my favorites in their honor. I loved
’s post on the new Dylan movie, which prompted me to add some Dylan onto my playlist.Wishlisting… I wrote a whole thing about how kick-flare pants aren’t my thing a year or so ago, but I have to say I’m really, really tempted again. This is the time of year where I find jeans to be far too cold, and I’m not really feeling my corduroys right now. My grey flannel trousers are great, but way too formal for hanging around the house. I might give the Faye pants a try again, particularly after I stretched my personal definition of style in 2024.
I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
My son had his first day at his new elementary school today. His teacher updated me that he had a great day and even made a few friends!
I had some Fayes and then took the silhouette and made myself some jeans which I love. It’s a great silhouette on most body types which is probably why they are so popular! This year I’m hoping to perfect the 1960s cropped cocktail pant.
