I love old-school blog posts that share what’s actually going on in the life of the writer. I think of these posts as a virtual cocktail party: a way to catch up with what’s been currently happening. While I usually post this style of post on Fridays, I’m enjoying switching it up to a mid-week post this time!
Doing… lots of exploring! We’re on vacation and I’m very much enjoying getting to know a new city. I always love revisiting the same cities to get to know them better. I’m under no impression that I know LA in any meaningful sense, but after several visits now I’m finally learning the lay of the land (or at least the geography of the neighborhoods). Below are a few photos from my adventures.
Buying… I came to the reluctant conclusion that my favorite Krewe sunglasses (these are similar) really need their lenses buffed; they’re quite scratched. I went shopping in person at Nordstrom earlier this week and fell for a great pair of Clubmasters from Cole Haan.
Wearing and Loving… We could not have picked a better time to escape New York than to skip the crazy heat wave. The weather has been so cool (comparatively speaking) that I’ve been living in white jeans and La Ligne sweaters.
Wishlisting… I still don’t feel like I have a great handle on LA style—it feels far more diverse than New York does lately, to be quite honest—but I’m feeling inspired. Donni seems to be the brand of choice for moms at the children’s activities here in our adopted neighborhood, and these poplin pants would be great for both cooler mornings and warmer evenings. I’m seriously considering them! I’m planning to stop by Teller later on this trip (a favorite from our last visit) and see if they have them in stock.
Reading… The Golden Hour by Matthew Specktor totally gripped me on the plane and I’m about halfway through right now. It’s a wonderfully written memoir about the entertainment industry, Specktor’s family, and Los Angeles. I’m eager to finish while we’re here!
Cooking… lots of fresh produce—honestly things taste so much better when they’re grown locally, and it’s been so nice to buy everything local!
Listening to… We’re not doing the Laurel Canyon vacation I’d originally envisioned, which is fine, but then of course I needed to edit my playlist. I’m working on a new one right now. Our vibe this trip is definitely mellow and I’m very much enjoying it.
Watching… The trailer for Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight. I love a good memoir, and I read this book in high school and many other times throughout my life. It’s a fascinating, unapologetic look at family life in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), as narrated by the author, Bobo Fuller. I had the great good fortune to meet her at a book signing in Boulder years ago, where she signed my beat-up copy of the book. All of her memoirs are gripping, painful, enlightening, moving—I can’t recommend them more. The trailer looks amazing (and they often don’t, for stories with this nuance), and I’m very eager to see when it comes out in a few weeks.
What’s next… more exploring, window shopping, and eating. I’m really trying to seize the day here as much as possible and make the most of our trip—which includes downtime. It’s been a long year (not to MENTION everything that’s going on in the world right now…), so rest is very needed.
Looking forward to hearing from you and what you are up to!
In the LA area I recommend visiting the two presidential libraries (Reagan and Nixon). They are both very unique, but the Reagan one was especially impressive. (I think you don’t have to necessarily be a fan of their presidencies to get something out of the experience.)
