A well-made overcoat, for instance, is going to last much longer than a cheaply-made one, no matter how well you take care of the mass-market one. This can definitely be prohibitive, but 1) you will save money in the long run because you won't need to replace it; 2) you can find incredible deals on pieces in the off-season; 3) investing in a piece means less waste: you take the time to find the right piece instead of skipping through various options that aren't good enough, etc.
